Fix: Computer Won't Connect to Wi-Fi

Work through quick checks and diagnostic steps to get a computer back online when it won't connect to Wi-Fi.

Symptoms

No internet icon, a "Limited Connectivity" warning, or a "Can't connect to this network" message.

What You'll Need

  • A few minutes
  • Access to your Wi-Fi settings and your network name/password

Quick Checks (2-Minute Fixes)

  1. Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on (airplane mode off).
  2. Restart the router/modem (unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in).
  3. Confirm you're selecting the correct network name and entering the correct password.

Diagnostic Steps (If Quick Checks Don't Work)

  1. Check whether other devices can connect to the same network — this tells you if it's the router or just this one device.
  2. "Forget" the network on your device, then reconnect to it from scratch.
  3. Update your network adapter drivers (Windows: Device Manager; Mac: Software Update).

Resolution

If only one device is affected, updating or reinstalling its network adapter driver usually resolves it. If every device is affected, the router or your internet provider is the more likely cause — a router restart resolves this in most cases.

Still Stuck?

If none of the above gets you back online, it may be a router configuration or an ISP-side issue that's easier to sort out with a technician than to keep guessing at — book a network/Wi-Fi setup visit below.
