How to Set Up a New Printer

Connect a new printer to a Windows PC or Mac over USB or Wi-Fi, and print a test page to confirm it's working.

What You'll Need

  • 10–15 minutes
  • The printer, its power cable, and ink or toner
  • A USB cable (if connecting by USB) or your Wi-Fi network name and password

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Unbox the printer and install the ink or toner cartridges per the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Connect the printer to power and turn it on.
  3. Connect it to your computer with a USB cable, or connect it to your Wi-Fi network using the printer's built-in display or menu.
  4. On Windows: open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners, and select Add device.
  5. On Mac: open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners, and click Add Printer.
  6. Select the detected printer from the list and install any drivers it asks for.
  7. Print a test page to confirm everything is working.

Expected Result

The test page prints successfully, and the printer appears as an option whenever you print from any app.

If This Didn't Work

  • Printer not detected? Make sure the printer and your computer are on the same Wi-Fi network, then restart both the printer and your router.
  • Driver installation fails? Visit the manufacturer's website (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, etc.) and download the driver for your exact model and operating system directly.
  • Test page won't print? Check for a paper jam or low-ink warning, and make sure the printer isn't paused in the print queue (Windows: Printers & scanners > your printer > Open print queue).
