How to Set Up a New Windows Account
Create a new Microsoft or local account on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, whether it's a brand-new computer or one you already use.
What You'll Need
- About 5 minutes
- Your Microsoft account email and password (if creating a Microsoft account) — or just a username in mind for a local account
- Admin access on the PC
Step-by-Step Instructions
- On a brand-new computer, turn it on and follow the on-screen setup prompts until you reach the account screen. On a computer you already use, open Settings and select Accounts.
- Select Family & other users (or Other users), then choose Add account.
- Choose the account type: a Microsoft account (recommended — enables OneDrive backup, the Microsoft Store, and syncing across devices) or a local account (works without an internet connection).
- Enter the required information: your email or phone number for a Microsoft account, or a username and password for a local account.
- Set up a PIN or password so you can sign in securely.
- Choose your privacy settings (location, diagnostics, personalized ads) and confirm your choices.
- Wait for Windows to finish setting up the account, then sign in to reach the desktop.
Expected Result
You're signed into a working Windows desktop under the new account, and it now appears as an option on the sign-in screen going forward.
If This Didn't Work
- Forgot your Microsoft account password? Use Microsoft's account recovery page (account.live.com/password/reset) before trying again.
- "No internet connection" during setup? Local accounts don't require internet — look for "I don't have internet" or "Continue with limited setup," or connect to Wi-Fi first and try again.
- Add account option missing or grayed out? You'll need admin access on that PC — sign in with an administrator account first.
